Aggregates are basic ingredients of concrete because they act as inert materials. There are two main types of fine aggregate and coarse aggregate for concrete. As the name suggests, aggregates are usually classified depending on the sizes and structure of aggregates particles. There are some major differences between fine and coarse aggregates.

Types of aggregates include Coarse aggregate and fine aggregate. The aggregate of each type is further sub-divided into many types and classification based on its size. The technique of Sieve Analysis is used for gradation of aggregate for use in concrete and for other applications.
These materials can be supplied in either coarse or fine-aggregate sizes. Fine aggregates have 100% of their material passing the 10 mm sieve. Coarse aggregates have the bulk of the material retained on 4.75 mm sieve. Aggregates comprise the greatest volume percentage in portland-cement concrete, mortar, or asphaltic concrete.
Introduction to fine aggregates: The maximum size used is 80 mm and the range of 80 mm to 4.75 mn is known as coarse aggregate and 4.75 to 150 µm is called fine aggregate. Size 4.75 mm is common for both fine and coarse fractions.
Combined gradation means fine and coarse aggregates are combined (friction at many points, good interlocking, and few voids, economical). Gap grading is a grading in which one or more intermediate sizes are omitted in order to achieve a desired texture of concrete especially in architectural works

Coarse aggregates give strength to concrete. The sand, which is fine aggregate, fills the void in coarse aggregates and is a cement binder.
It provides a standard for aggregates obtained from natural sources for concrete production in Hong Kong. It also contains requirements for recycled aggregates which are suitable for production of some prescribed mix concrete and designed mix concrete.
